The two first met in the 2000s when \u003cstrong\u003eThought\u003c\/strong\u003e was first getting familiar with the contemporary soul scene. \"Out of that whole world, \u003cstrong\u003eMenahan Street Band\u003c\/strong\u003e was probably my favorite,\" recalling the funk and soul group \u003cstrong\u003eMichels\u003c\/strong\u003e was a founding member of back in 2007.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFast forward a few years and musicians from that collective—\u003cstrong\u003eDave Guy\u003c\/strong\u003e on trumpet and \u003cstrong\u003eIan Hendrickson-Smith\u003c\/strong\u003e on sax —are now full time players with \u003cstrong\u003eThe Roots.\u003c\/strong\u003e This connection eventually led \u003cstrong\u003eLeon\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eThought\u003c\/strong\u003e to doing a few fundraising events around NYC and Philly together. \"Before long, \u003cstrong\u003eBlack Thought\u003c\/strong\u003e was coming around the studio and would jam with us from time to time,\" \u003cstrong\u003eMichels\u003c\/strong\u003e explains. \"Then, fast forward to 2020 and COVID lockdowns, he just hit me up out of the blue, wanting me to send him stuff to write to. We both were looking to stay busy.\"\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor \u003cstrong\u003eGlorious Game, Michels\u003c\/strong\u003e would make wholly composed and recorded soul songs in his studio, sample himself, then chop and\/or loop up his sounds and create instrumentals for \u003cstrong\u003eBlack Thought.\u003c\/strong\u003e On some tracks he took a more traditional hip-hop approach, starting from samples of other people’s music but then adding live instrumentation on top.
