There is a reason why a full album of songs did not appear as a follow-up. \u003cstrong\u003eScott-Heron’s\u003c\/strong\u003e writing partner, \u003cstrong\u003eBrian Jackson\u003c\/strong\u003e had been keen to move forward quickly with song-based material, but \u003cstrong\u003eScott-Heron\u003c\/strong\u003e saw himself first and foremost as a writer. A new novel, \u003cstrong\u003eThe Nigger Factory,\u003c\/strong\u003e would be published in 1972 and he also enrolled for writing seminars at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOnce the decision was made to combine poetry and song, sessions were booked for the 2nd and 3rd March 1972. The first session with \u003cstrong\u003eBernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie (drums), Hubert Laws (flute\/piccolo), David Spinozza (guitar), Jerry Jemmott (bass) and Brian Jackson (electric and acoustic piano)\u003c\/strong\u003e recorded the songs with \u003cstrong\u003eHorace Ott\u003c\/strong\u003e taking care of the arrangements. The second was dedicated to poetry, recorded with \u003cstrong\u003eScott-Heron, Jackson, Eddie Knowles and Charlie Sanders\u003c\/strong\u003e from their college group \u003cstrong\u003eBlack \u0026amp; Blues\u003c\/strong\u003e. \u003cstrong\u003e“Free Will”\u003c\/strong\u003e was released in 1972.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe song side included the heart-rending Vietnam war commentary of \u003cstrong\u003e‘Do You Hear What They Said?’,\u003c\/strong\u003e the propulsive title track and the beautiful ‘\u003cstrong\u003eThe Middle Of Your Day’.\u003c\/strong\u003e The poetry side immerses you in the radical politics of the day via \u003cstrong\u003e‘No Knock’\u003c\/strong\u003e and ‘\u003cstrong\u003eThe King Alfred Plan’\u003c\/strong\u003e, and ends with his heartfelt tribute to \u003cstrong\u003eJohn Coltrane\u003c\/strong\u003e - \u003cstrong\u003e...and then he wrote Meditations’.\u003c\/strong\u003e Like “\u003cstrong\u003ePieces Of A Man”\u003c\/strong\u003e it is a classic and a cornerstone of any record collection.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe original master tapes sounded exceptional and when it has come to our reissue series have only ever required the most minimal of EQ before transferring them onto disc.
