But there are new stylistic touches throughout that really fit the songs, like the gentle piano on many songs, the radiowave noises of “\u003cstrong\u003eCan ‘t I Take This On”\u003c\/strong\u003e and, especially, the lovely backup harmonies by \u003cstrong\u003eGuided By Voices’ Robert Pollard\u003c\/strong\u003e on three tracks, including the beautiful opening rocker “\u003cstrong\u003eSame Day.” \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eThese touches don’t make the album, but they’re nice, a sign that\u003cstrong\u003e J. Mascis \u003c\/strong\u003eis not only still a viable musician, but also that he’s interested in trying new things, something not often said of him. All in all, \u003cstrong\u003eMore Light\u003c\/strong\u003e has a true sense of progression to it, and it’s a great reminder of how talented a songwriter \u003cstrong\u003eJ.
