Guitarist, \u003cstrong\u003eJimmy Page\u003c\/strong\u003e,\u003cstrong\u003e (\u003c\/strong\u003ewidely considered one of the greatest and most influential guitarists of all time),\u003cstrong\u003e \u003c\/strong\u003ewas the only survivor of the '60's band \u003cstrong\u003eThe Yardbirds\u003c\/strong\u003e, who played a big part in the UK blues revival before evolving into a psychedelic pop band, releasing a string of excellent singles including \u003cstrong\u003e'Happenings Ten Years Time Ago' \u003c\/strong\u003eand\u003cstrong\u003e 'Shapes of Things'\u003c\/strong\u003e. \u003cstrong\u003e'Led Zeppelin'\u003c\/strong\u003e was recorded as \u003cstrong\u003eThe New Yardbirds\u003c\/strong\u003e, but Page discovered the name was copyrighted, so \u003cstrong\u003eLed Zeppelin\u003c\/strong\u003e were born.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe band were driven by the powerhouse rhythm section of \u003cstrong\u003eJohn Bonham \u003c\/strong\u003eand\u003cstrong\u003e John Paul Jones\u003c\/strong\u003e and over their rhythm beds \u003cstrong\u003eJimmy Page\u003c\/strong\u003e created unique, searing ethereal sounds, quite unlike anything ever heard before, accompanied by twenty year old \u003cstrong\u003eRobert Plant's\u003c\/strong\u003e four octave range vocals. The album was recorded live in the studio and \u003cstrong\u003ePlant's\u003c\/strong\u003e vocals were so powerful that screens were needed to mimimise leakage onto the other mikes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePage\u003c\/strong\u003e, produced the album, developing a 'distance makes depth' technique, which used room ambience to enhance the reverb by placing an additional microphone some distance from the amplifier and then recording the balance between the two. By adopting this technique, \u003cstrong\u003ePage\u003c\/strong\u003e became one of the first producers to record a band's 'ambient sound'. It was also one of the first albums to be released in stereo-only format.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOf the nine tracks, five are originals, two are \u003cstrong\u003eWillie Dixon\u003c\/strong\u003e blues standards and two are adaptations of traditional tunes. What makes this groundbreaking album stand out is the sheer sonic intensity of longer tracks such as \u003cstrong\u003e'Dazed and Confused'\u003c\/strong\u003e and the quality of the songwriting of the shorter tracks such as \u003cstrong\u003e'Communication Breakdown'\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003e'Good Times Bad Times'\u003c\/strong\u003e which are, surprisingly, pretty good pop songs.
