The brain and heart are both containers, with \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eas much space as you wish for them to have, and to live is to create \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ecollections of found affections. Sounds from your beloved and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003efamiliar blocks, movements of the trees and the people beneath \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ethem, the way someone you adore may hold you for a few lingering \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eseconds before releasing from a hug and vanishing into a crowded \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ecrosswalk. To think of our living, our making, and our loving in this \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eway means that, at least for some of us, we may be propelled forward \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eby the prospect of what's next. What moment we can hold and place \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ein our overflowing pockets. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe work of Lonnie Holley is, for me, a work of this kind of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eaccumulation and close attention. The delight of finding a sound \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eand pressing it up against another found sound and another until, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ebefore a listener knows it, they are awash in a symphony of sound \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ethat feels like it stitches together as it is washing over you. Tonky is \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ean album that takes it's name from a childhood nickname that was \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eaffixed to Holley when he lived a portion of his childhood life in a \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ehonky tonk. Lonnie Holley's life of survival and endurance is one that \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003erequired - and no doubt still requires - a kind of invention. An \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003einvention that is also rich and present in Holley's songs, which are full \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eand immersive on Tonky, an album that begins with it's longest song, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ea nine minute, exhaustive marathon of a tune called \"Seeds,\" which \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ebegins with a single sparse sound and then expands. Chants, faint \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ekeys, strings, and atop it all, Holley's voice, not singing, but speaking \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eplainly about working the earth when he was young, the violence he \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eendured in the process of it all, going to bed bloodied and in pain \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003efrom beatings. The song expands into a metaphor about place, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eabout the failures of home, or anywhere meant to protect you not \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eliving up to what it sells itself to be, even if you tirelessly work at it, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ework on it, work to make something worthwhile of it. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\"Seeds\" not only sets the tone for an album that revolves \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003earound rebirth, renewal, and the limits of hope and faith, but it \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ehighlights what Holley's greatest strength as a musician is, to me, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ewhich is a commitment to abundance, and generosity. He is an \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eincredibly gifted storyteller with a commitment to the oral tradition, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003esuch that many listeners (myself among them,) would be entirely \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003econtent sitting at the feet of a Lonnie Holley record and turning an \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eear to his robust, expansive storytelling.
