The group continued to strive for the perfect balance between thought-provoking poetry and rough rock n' roll.\u003c\/span\u003e \u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe opening \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003ci\u003eAsk the Angels\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e was perhaps the \u003cstrong\u003ePatti Smith Group\u003c\/strong\u003e's most straight-ahead rocker up to that point, while the exploratory reggae-tinged \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAin't it Strange\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003ewould be extended concert staple. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe tempo is brought down a notch or two on the cool \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003ci\u003ePoppies\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003ci\u003eAbyssinia\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, and \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eChiklets\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e (the latter a bonus track on the '96 CD remaster), but soon returns to furious rock with Pumping (My Heart).
