Both formats include the original album, remastered by JJ Golden (Pearl Jam, Thee Oh Sees), as well as \u003cb\u003e12 previously unreleased demos from the era\u003c\/b\u003e (rediscovered recently in the archives of the band’s original A\u0026amp;R guy, Geoffrey Weiss). The double vinyl edition—the album on translucent turquoise, the demos on translucent orange—arrives in a slick gatefold jacket.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eIn some ways, \u003ci\u003eNeurotica\u003c\/i\u003e can be viewed as a \u003ci\u003eThis Is Your Life\u003c\/i\u003e–esque document of what brothers \u003cb\u003eJeff McDonald\u003c\/b\u003e and \u003cb\u003eSteve McDonald\u003c\/b\u003e had been working towards creatively since starting Redd Kross in their Hawthorne, CA, living room circa 1978. The songs quake with punk rock fury, no doubt about it… I mean, how could they possibly have shaken off all that untamed energy of their early years (the \u003ci\u003eRed Cross\u003c\/i\u003e years, one might call them) after it helped build such a strong foundation for Southern California hardcore punk \u0026amp; DIY culture (and, arguably, indie rock as a whole) alongside bands like \u003cb\u003eBlack Flag\u003c\/b\u003e, \u003cb\u003eCircle Jerks\u003c\/b\u003e, and \u003cb\u003eDescendents\u003c\/b\u003e? But that fury is only one part of the \u003ci\u003eNeurotica\u003c\/i\u003e formula. To find the other parts, you’d have to go back to the early- to mid-’70s when the McDonalds, then adolescents, lived for nothing but Saturday morning cartoons, sugary cereals, bubblegum pop singles and \u003cb\u003eBeach Boys\u003c\/b\u003e LPs, \u003cb\u003ePartridge Family\u003c\/b\u003e TV specials, and the bombastic arena-rock guitars of acts like \u003cb\u003eKISS \u003c\/b\u003eand \u003cb\u003eCheap Trick\u003c\/b\u003e. Whereas classic ’60s\/’70s radio and pop culture schmaltz served as fodder for most self-respecting punk rockers of the time to sneer at (even if they secretly were fans), it formed a tremendous part of the Redd Kross DNA. The band wore these influences on their day-glo sleeves and didn’t really care who was offended.\u003cbr\u003e \u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eThe McDonalds enlisted a grand crew of musicians that included guitarist \u003cb\u003eRobert Hecker\u003c\/b\u003e, keyboardist \u003cb\u003ePaul Roessler\u003c\/b\u003e (Screamers, Nervous Gender), and \u003cb\u003eRoy McDonald\u003c\/b\u003e (The Muffs) on drums. And in the producer’s chair guiding the young bucks? \u003cb\u003eTommy Erdelyi, aka Tommy Ramone\u003c\/b\u003e, one of the originators of punk rock melody. Unshakeable hooks would inspire rave reviews at the time of the album’s original release in 1987. The \u003ci\u003eL.A. Times\u003c\/i\u003e’ Craig Lee wrote: “\u003ci\u003eIn an age when too many bands base their music either on calculated career moves or heavy-handed pretensions, Redd Kross is as breezy as a kiss in the wind, a band born to rock in a world that forgot how.\u003c\/i\u003e” Plain and simple, \u003ci\u003eNeurotica\u003c\/i\u003e is just a fantastic piece of art.
