Thus, shortly after the album’s release, the band decided to remix the album for subsequent pressings. However, success intervened: the band rapidly scored a deal with A\u0026amp;M and began work on their major-label debut,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLouder Than Love\u003c\/strong\u003e, and the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUltramega OK \u003c\/strong\u003eremix project fell by the wayside as\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSoundgarden\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eclimbed their way to (ultra)mega-stardom.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2016, after worldwide success, a breakup, a reunion, and many albums and tours, the band finally acquired the original multi-track tapes to\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eUltramega OK \u003c\/strong\u003eand carved out time to dig into the remix. They handed the tapes over to longtime friend and engineer\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJack Endino\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e(\u003cstrong\u003eNirvana\u003c\/strong\u003e,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMudhoney\u003c\/strong\u003e,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eScreaming Trees\u003c\/strong\u003e,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSkin Yard\u003c\/strong\u003e), who worked with the band to create a fresh mix of the album that, for the band, ties up this persistent loose end and remedies the sound of their debut full-length. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhile they were at it, the band dug out six early versions of tracks that wound up on\u003cstrong\u003e Ultramega OK.\u003c\/strong\u003e The songs were recorded in 1987 on 8-track tape by\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJack Endino\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eand\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eChris Hanzsek\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eat\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eReciprocal Recording\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ein Seattle, and mixed by\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJack Endino\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003ein 2016. These versions feature the band in raw, powerful form – sonically closer to the band’s six-song debut, \u003cstrong\u003eScreaming Life \u003c\/strong\u003e– and provide a fascinating window into the development of songs that eventually became staples of the band’s set.
