Gone, by and large, were the grand, sweeping orchestral grandeur of those albums, the modern day \u003cstrong\u003ePhil Spector\u003c\/strong\u003e wall of sound replaced by what was, especially by comparison, a stripped-down rock and roll record clearly inspired by some of the bands who \u003cstrong\u003eSpiritualized \u003c\/strong\u003eand \u003cstrong\u003eJason “Spaceman” Pierce’s\u003c\/strong\u003e previous band \u003cstrong\u003eSpacemen 3\u003c\/strong\u003e had clearly influenced (\u003cstrong\u003eBlack Rebel Motorcycle Club\u003c\/strong\u003e most prominently, but others as well). At least that’s what the story was then, but time has thankfully shown how wrong that initial perception was.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eTwo decades later, \u003cstrong\u003eAmazing Grace\u003c\/strong\u003e sounds like both a logical turnabout from their two previous albums and it’s also aged wonderfully. The \u003cstrong\u003eSpector\/Crystals\u003c\/strong\u003e baiting title \u003cstrong\u003e“She Kissed Me (It Felt Like a Hit)”\u003c\/strong\u003e on side one is the clear and immediate standout, but that’s not the only place where this album’s charms lie. The gospel-tinged “\u003cstrong\u003eLord Let It Rain on Me’’\u003c\/strong\u003e is like a slightly more refined version of a song that could’ve been on their previous albums, while “\u003cstrong\u003eThe Ballad of Richie Lee”\u003c\/strong\u003e pays loving tribute to the fallen \u003cstrong\u003eAcetone\u003c\/strong\u003e singer and former labelmate of \u003cstrong\u003eSpiritualized\u003c\/strong\u003e on \u003cstrong\u003eVernon Yard\u003c\/strong\u003e who had passed away just two years prior to this album’s release.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThat also leads to another little-acknowledged fact about \u003cstrong\u003eAmazing Grace.\u003c\/strong\u003e While it’s not only stripped-down in terms of sound, but also in length—coming in at 42 minutes compared to the 63 minutes that \u003cstrong\u003eLet It Come Down\u003c\/strong\u003e clocked in at—it’s not just a ferocious garage rock album. Sure, there is the\u003cstrong\u003e T.
