The solo endeavour of \u003cstrong\u003eSulfate\u003c\/strong\u003e quickly morphed into a two-piece band, with \u003cstrong\u003eDavid\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eHarris’\u003c\/strong\u003e metronomic drumming proving integral to the sound of the group.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom the inception of the band the ethos has always been to create intensity through restraint, and they developed a live reputation for \u003cem\u003e“startling, sonorous… crushing yet considered” \u003c\/em\u003eperformances (\u003cstrong\u003eAmbientLightBlog\u003c\/strong\u003e). Sonically, things develop slowly, creating an atmosphere and mood that \u003cem\u003e“invades the subconscious” \u003c\/em\u003e(\u003cstrong\u003eGraham Reid\u003c\/strong\u003e) before the crushing noise sets in.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSulfate\u003c\/strong\u003e released their debut self-titled album in 2019 via\u003cstrong\u003e Prison Tapes\u003c\/strong\u003e, setting out with the intention of making a truly DIY record. With their debut, the band reached #1 on multiple student radio stations, and completed two tours of New Zealand and a tour of Australia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is with this foundation set that \u003cstrong\u003eSulfate\u003c\/strong\u003e created \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e‘Godzone’\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e, an album written during the chaos of 2020, and recorded early 2021 at \u003cstrong\u003eRuddell’s\u003c\/strong\u003e home studio in Balmoral, Auckland. \u003cstrong\u003eHariet\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eEllis\u003c\/strong\u003e, who featured as a guest on \u003cem\u003e‘Bush’\u003c\/em\u003e on the debut record, has joined as a full-time band member, adding grinding, distorted bass guitar to the mix and with vocals featuring more prominently.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ciframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KtVTS0T5B9Q\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/iframe\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDrawing on influences from \u003cstrong\u003eBailterspace\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eTropical Fuck Storm\u003c\/strong\u003e to \u003cstrong\u003eJóhann Jóhannsson\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eEarth\u003c\/strong\u003e, this sophomore album displays a natural progression from their self-titled debut. Sonically, \u003cstrong\u003eRuddell\u003c\/strong\u003e has been honing his production skills over the past two years, recording and mixing local acts \u003cstrong\u003eDick Move\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eNa Noise\u003c\/strong\u003e (both nominated for ‘\u003cem\u003eBest Independent Debut\u003c\/em\u003e’ at the \u003cstrong\u003eTaite Music Awards\u003c\/strong\u003e) and \u003cstrong\u003eJazmine Mary\u003c\/strong\u003e. This has paid dividends, with \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e‘Godzone’\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e sounding more polished, yet retaining the DIY character of the first record.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe thematic content of the record has its sights firmly set on New Zealand society.
