Led by deep-voiced vocalist \u003cb\u003eMatt Berninger,\u003c\/b\u003e who often sounds hung-over yet disarmingly articulate, the band excels at brooding mid-tempo songs, as exemplified by the world-weary \"\u003ci\u003eFake Empire\u003c\/i\u003e,\" which combines political and personal themes, and \"\u003ci\u003eMistaken for Strangers\u003c\/i\u003e,\" a track that recalls NYC peers \u003cb\u003eInterpol\u003c\/b\u003e, thanks in part to the punchy approach of shared producer Peter Katis.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAnd while his presence isn't immediately apparent, indie hero \u003cb\u003eSufjan Stevens\u003c\/b\u003e contributes piano to two tracks (\"\u003ci\u003eRacing Like a Pro\" and \"Ada\u003c\/i\u003e\"), adding to t\u003cb\u003ehe National's\u003c\/b\u003e increasingly expansive aesthetic, which also incorporates strings and horns.
