Three albums and a 7” single on Flying Nun between 1986 and 1993 attracted critical appreciation and notoriety in equal measures for “pop as shambling and sweet as you could possibly imagine”. In 1993 The Puddle toughened up and recorded the brainy outsider rock album, “\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003eSongs for Emily Valentine\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e”, but, apart from a 1995 single on a French label, the SFEV recordings were not released until 2005. Then, in 2007, The Puddle re-emerged with “\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003eNo Love – No Hate\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e” followed two years later by “\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003eThe Shakespeare Monkey\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e”. When first released as an overlong CD in 2009 it was the band’s 6\u003c\/span\u003e\u003csup\u003eth\u003c\/sup\u003e\u003cspan\u003e album in over 25 years and only the 4th studio album to be released. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eGeorge\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e(guitars, vocals, keyboards) was joined by \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eGavin Shaw\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e(Sferic Experiment, Children’s Television Workshop)\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e on bass and brother\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e Ian Henderson\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e on drums etc. along with future member \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eAl Starrett\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e(viola) to deliver a wildly diverse collection of songs ruminating on eclectic subjects ranging from populist philosopher Colin Wilson (“\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003eAs it Was\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e”), dead poets (“\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003eOne Romantic Gesture\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e”), the Greek god Pan (“\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003eSeduced by Virgins\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e”) film stars (“\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003ci\u003eMilk\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e”), and infinite monkey probability theorem1 (“\u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003ethe Shakespeare Monkey\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e”). The original unedited sprawl of the CD release of “\u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eThe Shakespeare Monkey\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e” was “an album with the b-sides left on” 2 .The re-mastered LP release is a chance to re-imagine the best of the album as it would have been had it been released as an LP at the time.
