On their second album, Liverpool's Carcass refining the raw mess of their debut Reek of Putrefaction, also released by Earache Records

The comically-ridiculous song titles (which legend has it were taken from a medical text book belonging to guitarist Bill Steer's sister) and revoltingly gory subject matter ended up defining the genre of "Goregrind".

'Symphonies of Sickness' spawned a slew of imitators but Carcass themselves were ready move on and on their next album 'Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious' and especially their fourth album 'Heartwork', they did just that - pioneering another metal sub-genre: Melodic Death Metal.

For many fans however, it's their more raw early work that still defines "true" Carcass
